Community Development

What is Community Development?

At Silver Arch Family Resource Centre, we are committed to making a difference in North Tipperary. Through our dedicated community development efforts, we aim to create vibrant, inclusive, and empowered communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

The Community Development program is a diverse program involving collective and community focus of group development.

The work is carried out with groups and individuals and wider communities and aims to enhance participation for the future and build collective and personal resilience

Community Development gives you the opportunity to grow your own personal social network. It organizes people to work together through collective action to meet their common goals and is the most effective method for building community and promoting well-being.

How does it work?

Community Development assists people to look at issues that affect their everyday lives and assist people making community connections. Our Community Development Service focuses on:

Older Persons Projects

We design and implement various projects aimed at supporting and enriching the lives of older adults in our community. These initiatives focus on social engagement, health and wellness, and providing opportunities for older adults to contribute their valuable skills and experiences. For example, we have delivered the following course:

Digital Literacy – 6 week programme where you learn how to navigate your mobile, tablet or computer. Supporting you in familiarising yourself with Email, Whatsapp and the internet.

Seasonal Art & Craft - Arts & Crafts programs giving the participant have the opportunity to explore various craft and art activities in a relaxed environment.

Health & Wellbeing Initiatives

We are committed to promoting the health and wellbeing of our community members through various programs and activities. These initiatives are tailored to address the unique health needs of our community, encouraging healthy lifestyles and fostering a sense of wellbeing. A number of our Health & Wellbeings activities include:

Green Exercise Programme - Includes exercises for mobility, flexibility and balance, very suitable for beginners or anyone wanting to get back into exercise safely.

Health Food Made Easy Course – 6 week interactive and fun course, to learn about food and nutrition

Sow & Grow Programme – ‘Sow and Grow’ is a 6 week gardening programme for families of all ages who want to learn more about sowing and growing salads, vegetables, herbs and flowers from seeds and plants.

My Hand To Your Hand - This 6 week course is an intergenerational skill sharing initiative. It is a safe space to meet new people, share traditional skills or simply reminisce.

"I just want to tell you how much I appreciate being able to do the Green Exercise Programme. I live in town, and before I started coming here, I used to drive everywhere. Now I’m walking down town instead of driving, and it’s lovely, because not only am I getting a bit more exercise, but I’m meeting people on my way down town."

The Health and Wellbeing Programme has enjoyed strengthening our inter-agency and local organisation links to successfully identify current and developing needs for our communities in relation to health and wellbeing, in addition to delivering a variety of opportunities for people to learn more on how to support their physical, mental and social health.

Who is it for?
